Yesterday, my friend Tyler and I embark on yet another new adventure, up to Old Orchard Beach, Maine on a small railroad called Amtrak! We departed Boston’s North Station at 9:00 AM, and the train was sold out! It was a great two-hour ride, and we arrived to Old Orchard Beach at about 11:15 AM.

Upon arrival, since we have never been here before, we had no idea where to start, let alone where to go from the train station to get to the Palace Playland, the amusement park, the strip, or the peer. Fortunately, with some assistance from passengers, we were able to successfully navigate ourselves to the boardwalk, which is full of many different food booths. A great thing about this beach is that Palace Playland, the pier, and the beach are pretty much connected, so it is super easy to get between the attractions!

Our first stop was Pier French Fries, where they have the best hand-cut fries in Old Orchard Beach. Man, were these hand-cut fries awesome. We bought a huge box of them and split them. After that, we wandered around a bit to figure out where we were, and got assistance to Palace Playland. They have around 25 rides, and we went on the Pirate Ship, which is pretty much a swing, the Matterhorn, which goes up and down and spins at the same time, and the Tilt-A-Whirl. Tyler did not think that he would do many rides, but for this first amusement park segment, he did all three!

After those rides, we wandered around and found ourselves on the pier, which overlooks the beach and the Atlantic Ocean. For lunch we found ourselves at a Mexican food stand, but as it turned out, they had lobster rolls, which are fresh up here in Maine, so we enjoyed those. After that we walked down to the beach and enjoyed putting our feet into the water. Man, was it cold, and the waves were pretty big! But, it felt great to cool off.

  • A photo of the Riptide, a thrill ride at the Palace Playland Amusement Park in Old Orchard Beach Maine. Riders are seated in a long row of seats facing out towards the midway. The ride will swing in constant motion to the right, and then later in the duration of the ride it will swing to the left, while the riders experience the sensation of centrifugal force.

After that, back to Palace Playland for more rides! We tackled the rest of the thrill rides, including the Galaxy Roller Coaster, the Adrenalin ride, Cascade Falls, the only water ride, the Power Surge, the only upside down ride at the park, and the Riptide. The only ride that Tyler didn’t embark upon was the Power Surge. We were fortunate enough to have Jasmin, a park employee, assist us not only in the park, but after the rides, we went and enjoyed fried Oreos and other fried treats and fresh-squeezed lemonade, and she assisted with that as well. The staff here are so amazing!

To conclude the day, we enjoyed fresh clam chowder at Hooligan’s Irish Pub, located on the pier. After that, we took the train back to Boston at 7:30 PM. It was a great and an exhausting day, but we would definitely go back!
